Performance Tuning is something that any SQL Professional knows is part of the profession. Tuning is a skill that takes a lot of time to develop, is frustrating while learning but helps you to learn how the SQL Engine executes T-SQL statements. The reward to all this time and effort is a new skill set and greater confidence in yourself as a Professional.
A couple of weeks ago I was asked to help a client solve a performance issue. The problem was with a report that was taking 20 minutes to complete. I took a look at the execution plan and found a scan of a large table with 300 million records in it. Using a DEV SQL instance and a copy of the Report Database, I was able to create an index that allowed SQL to fulfill the request in less than 10 seconds. I applied the new index to the report database and the client was extremely pleased. On to the next challenge!!
